MORRO DE SÃO PAULO

Morro de São Paulo

History: The lands of the municipality of Cairu form an archipelago composed of 26 islands, being 23 islets without expression and 3 inhabited islands. The island of Tinharé, where, in addition to other villages, the Vilas de Galeão, Gamboa and the Village of Garapuá are located, is the most important, standing out for its importance as a tourist attraction.

The Morro de São Paulo Village originated with the construction of the Morro de São Paulo Fortress in the 17th century between the years 1628 to 1630. In the fortification's enclosure there were 58 pieces of cannon, command house, barracks, gunpowder house, prison and chapel of Nossa Senhora da Luz, and on top of the hill, guard body, chaplain's house and other buildings.

With the purpose of providing water supply to the Fortaleza garrison and the inhabitants of the village, the first public water distribution system was built in 1746, today called Fonte Grande. This fortress, now in ruins, was declared National Heritage.
The set was also composed of a Portaló that today gives access to the Port of Morro de São Paulo and still has a plaque commemorating its inauguration by D. Pedro II.
Getting to know Morro de São Paulo is to be enchanted by a whole new world. A wonderful place that combines the beauty of its beaches with the exuberance of its vegetation.

It brings together the splendor of nature in all its plenitude, being a true paradise for tourism known internationally.
